Last week I got my very first book from Book of the Month! I was pretty excited Thursday morning when I went out and it was sitting in the mailbox. I jumped in and started reading right away! Over the long holiday weekend, I make sure to pick the book up any time I had a spare 30 seconds!
Synopsis:
Samiah Brooks never thought she would be "that" girl. But a live tweet of a horrific date just revealed the painful truth: she's been catfished by a three-timing jerk of a boyfriend. Suddenly Samiah-along with his two other "girlfriends," London and Taylor-have gone viral online. Now the three new besties are making a pact to spend the next six months investing in themselves. No men and no dating.
For once Samiah is putting herself first, and that includes finally developing the app she's always dreamed of creating. Which is the exact moment she meets the deliciously sexy Daniel Collins at work. What are the chances? But is Daniel really boyfriend material or is he maybe just a little too good to be true?
What I Liked:
First, right off the bat, I LOVED the way these girls were so empowered to stand up to this guy that had done them wrong! It is something that I would definitely want to do but would never have the guts! The fact that these girls could have easily turned on each other, instead they decided to join together and build an amazing relationship. As the main character, Samiah's story is the main focal point of the book, she is definitely the embodiment of an empowered woman. She has an amazing career, can accomplish amazing things, and needs help from no man. Samiah knows what she wants out of life and is willing to work hard to get it! Unlike most she does voice her concern about making sure that she is not only succeeding for herself but also to make things easier for the up-and-coming women (especially minorities), this at times gives leaves her playing the martyr which was both an endearing quality but also a hindrance at times.
The budding relationship between Samiah and Daniel is a meet-cute office romance. The back and forth that they had throughout the first half of the book was cute and led to a couple of steamy moments. I thought that the author was able to sprinkle in just the right amount of steam!
What I Didn't Like:
Even though I did really like seeing the developments with Samiah and Daniels relationship, I would have rather gotten more details or more interactions with the three girls! I think a story about just their relationship and getting to know each other would have been a great introduction. I mentioned above that I felt like Samiah played the martyr to the point that it was a hindrance in my opinion. There were times when I was "thinking get over yourself!" However, those moments were fleeting and I got over them quickly because of the endearing quality of just wanting to look out for others!
My Rating:

All-in-all I am was pretty thrilled with this book! I was nervous to pick this book as my first introduction to the Book of the Month program because my go-to genre is usually thrillers/mysteries. However, I am very happy that I was able to get out of my comfort zone. I was excited when looking at this book on Amazon to see that it says Book 1 in this series so I am hopeful we will see more of the girls in the near future.
